The Bag: Part 1 - Forms

Published on 22 April 2023 at 16:38

In our previous entry, we introduced you to your new best friend, The Bag. Your main carrier for all your essentials. So first, I'd like to take a look at some of the forms The Bag can take.

Backpack

Ah, yes. The ever popular traveling bag. Knapsack, hiking bag, bookbag, backpack, baggy-buddy . . . am I the only one who calls it that? Oh. This bag is tried and true, and has different variations you can use. It is the most highly recommended, and the one I'll be focusing on the most in later articles, although I will try and make them compatible for most or all options. If the backpack is The Bag you have chosen, try to make sure it has large compartments and many zippered pockets, as well as side pockets for if you need to access something quickly. This bag is your best and only completely dependable friend.

Vehicles

So let's say you have a vehicle? Obviously, that's better, though in some cases, it can be tracked, and it's hard to drive it legally and not be taken back, unless you're over 18, which is why I prefer backpacks over them. But if you have one, by all means, use it. A trailer, car or truck gives you so much space, so much speed, and so much more safety at night. (especially if it's a trailer or has tinted windows) If you use this, hide valuables in nooks and crannies, and try to sleep where you can't be seen. Don't give anyone a reason to break into your car. Stay in well-lit areas with lots of people and police nearby. Try to look like you're road-tripping, and if asked, say you are. How can someone disprove that? It's not a thing that involves a legal process or is illegal, and honestly, it's kind of true.

The clothes on your back
Have no other alternatives? What's the harm in shoving a few things into your shirt? Pockets, layers, layers of pocketed clothing on pocketed clothing, etc. You need a place to store your items, and if push comes to shove, you can run away with nothing but the clothes on your back, while still taking more than just the clothes on your back. Some advantages to this are that it makes you look less like a runaway if done right, it divides weight more evenly, it can mean easier access, and if it is discreet enough, may make people believe you have a house where you left your stuff, and are therefore less likely to have much money. If using the clothes on your back, wear two pairs of underwear. One pair goes over your other pair and acts as a holder for your bills. Change is always stored in outer pockets, however, to avoid looking hidden. Just make sure to change money from underwear to pockets before purchases. This can be done in the restroom, in a stall or single bathroom to avoid any looks or suspicion, since you are trying not to be noticed. The disadvantages to this are that it might mean you have to bring more stuff, could be hot and uncomfortable, might not be done right and look weird, and, might be hard to not let items fall and slip around. As such, this is like many things in the world of runaways in that it is a last resort. Still, not a half-bad last resort.
